Third Grade 

  • Grade Three Curriculum

    In Grade Three we use the text We Believe/We Are the Church by Sadlier. The children learn the following concepts in religion:
    • Jesus Gives Us the Church
    • We Are Members of the Church
    • The Church Leads Us in Worship
    • We Are Called to Discipleship

    Along with these units, the children will learn scriptures from the Old and New Testaments, and how to live as Jesus would. They will perform christian service in the community by making cards and gifts for a local nursing home, and other acts of kindness throughout the school year.
    The math curriculum in Grade Three consists of direct instruction utilizing the EUREKA Math program. In addition, as a supplement to the program, students utilize the Zearn Math computer program.  Students have computer time to access the Zearn program at least twice a week. EUREKA Math concepts covered in depth:
    • multiplication and the meaning of the factors
    • division as an unknown factor problem
    • multiplication & division using units of 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9,
    • distribution property and problem solving using units of 2-5 and 10
    • place value and problem solving with units of measurement
    • time measurement and problem solving
    • measuring weight and liquid volume in metric units
    • rounding to the nearest ten and hundred
    • two and three digit measurement, addition and subtraction
    • multiplication and division with units of 0, 1, 6-9
    • properties of multiplication and division
    • analysis of patterns and problem solving
    • multiplication of single-digit factors and multiples of 10
    • multiplication and area
    • fractions  as numbers on the number line
    • collecting and displaying data
    • geometry and measurement with word problems
    This comprehensive program helps students in several areas. It works on understanding the phonics associated with various vowel and consonant combinations. It builds writing skills such as the importance of using and decoding sounds and words. It also has a grammar focus, helping students classify the weekly spelling words into their grammatically correct usage.

    In addition other skills which are literacy focused include:
    • making inferences
    • using context clues
    • how to properly use analogies and idioms  

    Reading Language Arts
    In grade three, the modern literacy model is utilized as part of the curriculum. Grade three also utilizes classroom trade books, magazines and library books. The students read every day for 15 minutes along with our daily reading and language arts class. The students read every night for homework which includes a nightly reading log. Grade three has monthly reading projects on different genres with fun art activities.  We have a reading specialist that works with us on weekly writing assignments, and she also reads the children stories.

    Social Studies
    We have a dynamic Social Studies curriculum that focuses on regional communities throughout our country. We also familiarize students with geography in the Northeast Region with emphasis on the history of Rhode Island.
